How to Transfer your iTunes Library & Playlists to a New Computer?

If you’ve bought a new computer, you will want to transfer all the iTunes library, playlists and other stuff onto your new computer. This process can be long and tedious if you’ve downloaded hundreds of songs over the years. Worry not, there are easy ways to transfer your iTunes data. Read on to find out..

Transfer iTunes Library

Step 1: Consolidate your Files

  1. Open the iTunes application.
  2. Click on File, select Library.
  3. Select Organise Library | Consolidate Files.
  4. iTunes will copy your files to the iTunes directory. All original files will remain unchanged.

Step 2: Backup your iTunes Media

By default, your iTunes Media folder is located in the Music folder. However, if the actual location is different, you may check it through the Preferences dialog.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to the following location: C:\Users\UserName\Music\iTunes Media
  3. If you’re using Windows 11, right-click on the iTunes Media folder and select Compress to Zip File. Move the newly created Zip file to a safe location. If you’re using an earlier version, right-click on the iTunes Media folder, select Copy and paste your files to a new directory.

If the above folder could not be found, follow the steps given below:

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Click on Edit, select Preferences.
  3. Copy the location displayed under the iTunes Media Folder Location section.
  4. Exit iTunes.

Steps 3: Transfer your Media Files

  1. Install iTunes on your new computer.
  2. Go to the folder C:\Users\UserName\Music\iTunes Media on your old computer and move it to a USB flash drive or CD ROM.
  3. Copy the entire folder to your new computer in the same directory: C:\Users\UserName\Music\iTunes Media
  4. Press and hold the Shift key of your keyboard and open iTunes.
  5. Click on Choose Library.
  6. Select the following file: C:\Users\UserName\Music\iTunes Media\iTunes Library.itl
  7. Click on Open.

Transfer iTunes Playlists

Similarly, you can transfer your iTuens playlists as shown under:

Export your Playlists:

  1. Open iTunes on your old computer.
  2. Click on File | Library.
  3. Select Export Playlist.
  4. You’ll be prompted to select your desired format. Select XML.
  5. Copy the XML file to your new computer.

Import your Playlists:

  1. Open iTunes on your new computer.
  2. Click on File | Library.
  3. Select Import Playlist.
  4. Select the XML file you transferred from the old computer.

If you’ve hundreds of songs in your iTunes library, it’s a good idea to remove duplicates and optimize your library. Removing duplicates will reduce the clutter, make the library smaller and simplify the transfer process smoother.

  1. Download Clone Files Checker.
  2. Click on the System Scan tab > iTunes Search.
  3. Clone Files Checker will display a warning that it identifies duplicates on the basis of music tags.
  4. CFC will automatically automatically gather the location of your iTunes library and add it to the Include to Scan tab.
  5. Select your desired music tags for comparing songs. It is recommended to keep the File Content tag checked. CFC will use it in the case other tags are missing in your files.
  6. Click on Start Search.
  7. Use the Select Duplicates button to mark or unmark songs of your choice and then click on Select Action > Delete.
