1. Use Windows Explorer / File Explorer

Your Windows has Windows Explorer / File Explorer that has the express task of helping you find duplicate DOC and XLS files. Bearing the moniker Windows Explorer, you might think it can be helpful in taming your hundreds of thousands of DOC and XLS files. In reality, your Explorer barely scratches the surface in helping clean up your duplicate files.

Here is how to work with this option works this way:

  1. Open Windows Explorer / File Explorer.
  2. Move to Address Bar. Change it to PC>Local Disk (C:) > All Files >
  3. Now type this command in the search box: extension:doc (or docx) or extension:XLS
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Now right-click and hit View > Details.
  6. Click on Name. This way you’ll get the results alphabetically.
  7. Now you have all files. Check all of them, one-by-one.
  8. Now keep selecting the dupes by pressing Ctrl.
  9. All done! Now press Delete.

Remember: Anytime you start removing a bunch of DOC and XLS files, you should have a current backup of your system. If you mistakenly delete a file you shouldn’t have deleted, you can use the backup to restore it. You need to double-check and carefully examine each file you’re about to delete to ensure it’s something really you should delete. And that takes millions of hours to complete.

2. Try Clone Files Checker

The software isn’t a “do it all” package. It’s specifically for identifying and removing duplicate files on your system. To find duplicate DOC or XLS files with CFC, follow these steps:

  1. Run CFC.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Now check All Files. This directs you to your recently added folder/drive.
  4. Now you have Search Options. Select Custom > Documents (as you’ve to find DOC and XLS files only)
  5. Hit Start Search.
  6. It shows you all dupes.
  7. Click Select Duplicates, and choose one of these actions:
  8. Now hit Select Action.
  9. Here you go! Now you’ve two options: Either delete them permanently or move them to folder.

Bottom line

Now all balls are in your own courts. Make your decision. You’ve to decide whether you’ve to examine each file, one by one with your Windows Explorer, or letting Clone Files Checker do the job for you.
