How to Delete Words, Digits, Characters and Symbols from Filenames

Efficient file naming is crucial. If you are someone who works with files a lot, it is likely that you often save or download various files with random file names. This leads to an accumulation of randomly named files all across your computer, which can make it difficult for you to locate a file when needed. To avoid such problems, you must work towards having a proper file naming convention for your computer system.

Easy File Renamer is a great tool that allows users to rename files in bulk by adding or deleting words, digits, characters or even symbols from filenames. EFR is engineered by a team of great experts who ensured the tool is user-friendly and not time consuming at all. Using Easy File Renamer is a piece of cake. First, download Easy File Renamer from its website for free and run the installation setup.

Once you launch the program, you will then see several tabs at the top. Head to the System Renamer tab. Here, you will have an option to load files by clicking on the “Add Files” button. Alternatively, you can also directly load full folders by clicking on the Folders tab.

Once you have the files or folders loaded, head to step 2 and open the Select Rule dropdown menu. Here, you will see a list of renaming rules that you can apply.

If you want to delete certain digits, characters, symbols or words from the existing filenames, you should opt for the Remove Text rule.

In the text tab, you can enter the word(s), symbol(s), character(s), or digit(s) that you want to delete from the filenames. You can delete their first occurrence, last occurrence, or all occurrences, as per your requirements. You will also have an option to make the detection and deletion case insensitive. In the screenshot above, we are deleting all instances of the text “IM” that occur in our filename, regardless of whether they are uppercase or lowercase. The best part is that you can apply multiple rules together so you won’t have to repeat the whole loading process again and again. Similarly, you can apply rules to multiple files or directories at the same time.

While you add rules and make changes, you can also see a preview of the changes in the “Item New Name” column. If you are not satisfied with how an applied rule resulted, you can also delete the rule from the Applied Rules section. Once you are completely satisfied with the changes, you can click on the green Rename button at the bottom to finally save the desired changes.

Apart from deleting things, you can also use Easy File Renamer to insert more characters, digits, symbols or even full words to the existing file names.
