Over the last few years, you may have accumulated so many files from different acquaintances. These files may be scattered across different folders, sub-folders and partitions of your hard disk. Not to mention, some of your files may also be scattered across the external hard disk, USB flash drive, and Web-based cloud platforms. Eventually, you run into the obvious problem of files disorganization. Due to improperly named file names, it becomes a daunting task to find the right file in time and keep track of your important information. Unfortunately, there’s no in-house tool in Windows to deal with the problem of files disorganization. In this article, we’ll discuss the manual way to rename your files and how you can use third-party specialized tools to use various renaming patterns such as text cases, for your benefit.
Method 1: Manually Rename your Files
You can rename your files at once if they’re located in a single folder. This method is recommended if you’ve a handful of files to rename. If you’ve hundreds of files to rename in different folders, sub-folders, skip to Method 2.
Steps
- Double-click This PC icon on your Desktop.
- Open the folder that contains your files.
- Select the multiple files you want to use. Here are some methods to batch select your files:
- Use Ctrl + A to select all files in a folder
- Click a file, press and hold the Shift key to select files in an orderly manner
- Click a file, press and hold the Ctrl key to select random files
- Once you’ve finished selecting your files, press the F2 key to rename them.
- Type a new name for your files and then press Enter.
- Windows will rename your files and add an incremental number as a suffix. For example, if the original filename is Meeting.docx, other file names will be renamed as Meeting – Copy(2).docx, Meeting – Copy(3).docx, and so on.
Limitations:
- You may have to manually rename files from folder to folder, as the above procedure will not universally work on other folders or subfolders.
- When manually renaming, you do not have many choices. You can only replace your existing file names with a new name and incremental number. There is no way to replace or remove specific characters, change text case, swap words, etc.
Method 2: Rename Files, Change Text Case & Use 10+ Renaming Patterns Using Specialized Software
Different Types of Case Types:
- Upper Case: In this text type, every character in the word or sentence is capitalized. The idea is to bring attention to a specific word or phrase such as in legal agreements, or to convey urgency. In English, using upper case is not a common practice. Capital letters are mainly used for the first character in each statement, or while writing the names of people, places, etc. Example: IT TAKES A THIEF TO CATCH A THIEF.
- Lower Case: In the lower case, all alphabets in the sentence are written in the lower letter. Unlike upper case, it is a popular form of writing. Lower case are commonly used during Internet chats, or especially when people are sloppy about their writing. Example: it takes a thief to catch a thief.
- Sentence Case: Sentence case is a pattern of writing when the lower case is used for all the letters in the sentence, except for the initial letter which is in upper case. Sentence case is the most widely used form of text cases. Some of the examples include essays, business letters, Internet blogs, printed documentations, text-ads, etc. Example: It takes a thief to catch a thief.
- Title Case: Title case is the form of writing where every initial letter in each word is capitalized. Title case is commonly used for headings, render titles of published works, ad-copies etc. Example: About Us.
- Camel Case: One of the less-known text cases wherein the initial letter in each word is lowered while other letters are capitalized. Camel case is commonly used by programmers and software developers while naming variables. For example: myFunction, activateTrial
- Pascal Case: Pascal case is a naming convention used by software developers wherein the first letter of each word in a compound word is capitalized. For example: DownloadInstallUpdates
- Toggle Case: Toggle case is a text case in which random characters are capitalized without any pattern or sequence. It is a mixed case version of your text. Toggle case is popularly used for writing strong, less guessable passwords, or to convey sarcasm. For example: cOMpuTER, eleCTROnic
