Method 1: Use File Explorer to Rename Your Files
File Explorer in Windows is incredibly powerful. One of the less known facts about File Explorer is its ability to batch rename your files. The File Explorer which you use to browse through your files and folders can also be used to automate some of the file management tasks. In this solution, we’ll discuss how to accomplish it without downloading any third-party utility.
Steps
- First things first, open File Explorer by clicking on its icon on the Taskbar or by simply double-clicking the Users folder on your Desktop.
- Now, go to the folder that contains the files you want to rename. For the purpose of this article, we’ll assume its: D:\Downloaded Files
- If your folder contains only those files you want to rename with no other files, select them all using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + A
- If your folder contains other files besides those you want to rename, manually select your files by clicking on a file name while holding the Ctrl key of your keyboard. To select files in an orderly manner, click a file name while holding the Shift key.
- Once you’ve finished selecting your files, press the F2 key on your keyboard.
- Type a new name for your files, and press Enter to proceed.
- The selected files will be automatically renamed.
Limitations
- It’s worth mentioning that manually renaming files with File Explorer has some major limitations. For instance, you can rename files with only one renaming pattern. File Explorer inserts the typed text beside an incremental number (such as NewName.docx, NewName (2).docx, NewName (3).docx, etc).
- Another limitation is that you can only rename files from one folder at a time. You cannot rename files across multiple folders simultaneously. This is why it can still take longer if you’ve files to rename across multiple folders.
